Roald   Dahl

I enjoyed when we made our sparkly golden tickets because I liked putting the shiny beads on it.  I liked making the big pink BFG ears and i liked putting on the hairy pink pipe cleaners.  I loved making the delcious chocolate bar, it looked so good I wanted to eat the yummy looking chocolate bar.  I really enjoyed  reading  exciting Roald  Dahl books.  They were very interesting.  I had fun making Mrs Twits eye balls.  It was a good way to finish the week.

For Roald Dahl Week this is what we did -

1. We made Golden tickets which are out of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, although we chose how we made them.
2. We also made BFG ears.
3. We had to paint them two different colours, they were light pink and a darker pink but not too dark of a pink.
4. We had topic homework to do with Roald Dahl.
5. My favourite bit of this fantastic week about Roald Dahl was the homework.  It was brilliant!  By Lauren

The watery lagoon was like a Sherlock Holmes mystery waiting to be solved.

The steep stone steps were as jagged as the blades of a knife. 

The creepy man was like the devil sneaking down the stone steps. 

The house was like a jungle waiting for the zoo to come alive.   

The dragon’s teeth were like a volcano bursting through the rocks.

The mini solar system was like a fire burning through my eyes.

The golden desert was like blocks of gold piled up in the sand.

The sea was as silent as a mouse creeping into the darkness of the night.

The lift was like a gun shooting up into the night.

Once I went in, I had a garden in the room complete with a small bridge.  Giant black cobwebs barred my way.  I made my way up and it was like I was inside a hollowed out tooth. This was never ending it just crept into the darkness. It was like a dungeon of questions.  I opened the Furness and pulled a leaver then it shot up like a gun shot just fired.  As I took a look at all the leavers and tried to figure out how to work them the dungeon of puzzles came alive.  When they opened up there were tiny planets for someone to follow.

I found myself in the laboratory of a mad professor. Strange body parts of an animal were hung out of a giant snail shell, an experiment gone wrong. Intestines sprawled all over the desk like small ropes. Then the lift came back down and as I stepped inside it began to move upwards. I was petrified as I arrived up at the next level. As the man reappeared my heart started to race. Then he disappeared. The lift started to move and go back down. The door was locked and then it re opened and I sprang out.

Some of the Debating Club went to Falkirk Council’s Parent Conference in Victoria Primary School on Saturday 16th May, 2009.  Easter Carmuirs Debaters did two workshops to teach parents about the conventions of debating and to take part in a real debate. 

It was really hard for the parents because they didn’t have any time to prepare.  Also, they were on the opposing side (on the side that disagrees) with the Motion: “This house proposes that school uniform should be compulsory in all schools.”  We thought that most parents would agree with the motion so that made it extra hard!

Some brave parents from Grangemouth, Shieldhill and Larbert took part, as well as Kiera and Zoe’s mum, Mrs Kerr.  They all did a brilliant job.  They completed evaluations at the end and all said they really enjoyed it and that we were confident and able to put forward opionions in a calm way.  That made the day really good.

At lunch we met Provost Pat Reid who gave us pens and badges.  We also got our photos taken with him-and Dandy lion, our mascot.  We got to meet the author Matthew Fitt who writes in Scots Language (one novel he wrote is “The Eejits”) and we heard the author Alan Bissett who went to Hallglen Primary School.  He wrote the novel “Boy Racer”

Mrs Swan, the Director of Education was there and watched our powerpoint presentation about Debating in our school. 

In P3 we have been looking at ways we can become better citizens.  We have created characters so we can remember the 4 citizenship areas easily like Sparky the Star fish (self-esteem), Robin the Rainbowfish (relationships), Louie the Lobster (attitudes to learning) and Crusty the Crab (challenges).  Last week we concentrated on relationships and wrote stories showing ways we can form better relationships.  We made these into animations at ICT.  We looked at our individual target that we created after our interview for homework this week to see if we are any closer to achieving it.

GoAnimate.com: New Boy to School by dandy

On 10/03/09 Rosina Burns and Brandin Robertson attended the National Literacy Conference in the Glasgow Hilton Hotel.  They delivered workshops with Miss Reid and Mrs Ferguson from Falkirk Council.  Also delivering part of the workshops were Rob Marrs of the English Speaking Union and West Lothian Council’s Literacy Officer.  They spoke to audiences of Head teachers, HMIE and LTS.  Everyone who heard them said they did a fantastic job!

They met Professor David Booth from The University of Toronto who was the day’s main speaker.   There was an article in the Falkirk Herald about the event last week. 

We have been asked to help Westquarter Primary School set up their Debating club and are going out to visit them next week.  We have also been asked to run workshops at the Parental Conference on 16/05/09 in Victoria Primary School.

On Tuesday 25^th March primary 3 took a trip to Falkirk Town Hall to see some animations.  We have been looking at animations in class and have been doing lots of language work linked to them.  The animations were short and we watched 8 in total.  One was about a sunshine that was not as welcome as it had hoped, a boy and a duck, one where a beaver’s teeth had been stolen and a chair that changes into different things.  They were all really fun and exciting.  We had some interesting discussions when we got back to school.
